Curbed is seeking a self-motivated, multi-disciplinary visuals editor to implement and refine a brand identity that will distinguish our coverage wherever it is encountered. As an editor, you’ll have agency to influence visual decisions while collaborating with writers, editors, a photo editor, and our central brand identity team—and you will be in charge of creating and deploying the assets themselves onsite and via partner platforms.
Curbed is a national network comprising one flagship and 14 city-based sub-brands. Our focus is on the homes and cities where people live, and we aim to provide a few key services to our audience: We help them better understand their environment, from the forces that shape a city’s streetscape to navigating a mortgage; we get them excited about design by highlighting how it works and why it matters. We deliver news that has local value, and surface relevant issues to a much larger, national audience, and finally, we engage with our readers directly around their passion points.
—Deploy consistent illustration and graphic elements at both a brand/system level and the story level
—Work closely with editors to come up with creative visual concepts for onsite features
—Design and implement consistent graphic treatments that accurately represent the brand, working with centralized brand identity team when appropriate
—Push yourself to create outstanding design that communicate the brand values and mission of Curbed in every format, from onsite logos, to package templates, to style guides, to newsletters
—Propose solutions to design challenges, especially in the form of understandable infographics, process animation and data visualization
—Be able to formulate and articulate big creative ideas, and execute on a joint vision with editor-in-chief and photo director
—Collaborate with our social team to create and execute new templates, formats and visual experiences for social platforms
—Cultivate a stable of illustrators and designers and assign freelance work
—Work with centralized platform developers to test and advocate for digital tools, products, and templates
—5 years of experience working for an editorial outlet or brand
—Desire to work in a fun, digital-first newsroom that emphasizes unique writing, distinct voice and commitment to our audience
—Be passionate about doing the work yourself!
—Experience creating graphics with Adobe Creative Cloud applications (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, etc)
—Capable in HTML and CSS
—After Effects know-how a plus; ability to design for animation (think GIFs for Instagram, not documentary film credits)
—Working knowledge of data visualization, with ability to break down complex ideas into a visually appealing, sharable a-ha moment
—A demonstrated understanding of social media (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook) and an eagerness to explore with how people engage with content there
—Ability to multitask, prioritize, and excel in a fast-paced (read: daily, digital) work environment
